Lung cancer is a condition in which cells grow uncontrollably in the lungs (an organ that serves to spread oxygen into the blood while breathing in breath and removing carbon dioxide during sighs). Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer.
However, lung cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. This condition is mostly suffered by active and passive smokers. In the early stages, no sign or symptoms of lung cancer are obvious. But then symptoms like a persistent cough to a blood cough, always feel out of breath, fatigue for no reason, and weight loss will emerge.
Sufferers of lung cancer in Indonesia
Based on WHO data, lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer attacking male Indonesians. Based on Globocan data or International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2012, in Indonesia there were 25,322 cases of lung cancer that befalls men and 9,374 cases that befall women.
The results of the study at 100 hospitals in Jakarta showed that lung cancer is the most cancerous case in males, and the number four most in women. The incidence rate of lung cancer is quite low at the age below 40 years, and is increasing to the age of 70 years.
Types of lung cancer
There are two types of primary lung cancer based on its cell type, namely small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).... Non-small cell lung cancer is likely to be four times more common than small cell lung cancer.
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) usually only affects heavy smokers and its spread is faster compared to non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
People at risk of developing lung cancer
Smoking can be said to be the leading cause of lung cancer. The most risky person exposed to lung cancer is an active smoker. About 85 percent of lung cancer is associated with smoking habit. However, it does not mean that every smoker will be exposed to lung cancer. In addition, non-smoking people may also be affected by lung cancer, although it is lower in number.
Besides cigarettes, some other causes of lung cancer are inhaling arsenic, radiation, and air pollution. Lung cancer is also more common in elderly people.
Treatment in lung cancer
There are several factors that affect treatment methods and treatments that are done to overcome lung cancer namely:
How severe the spread of cancer.
Patient's health condition.
Types of cancer suffered.
Cancer removal surgery can be done if the cancer cells have not spread widely to other parts of the body. If a health condition is not possible to be performed, the other treatment can be applied. The process of destroying cancer cells by means of radiotherapy can be executed.
Lung cancer does not generally cause symptoms before the cancer cells spread to large parts of the lungs or to other parts of the body. Healing depends on the spread of cancer and when cancer diagnosis is known. The earlier the diagnosis is, the likelihood of treatment to succeed is also higher.
